Chicago-area Exports Up 17.4%
The final metropolitan export statistics for 2011 are in, and show the following for the Chicago metropolitan area:

? In 2011, the Chicago metropolitan area was the 7th largest export market in the United States, with merchandise shipments totaling $39.5 billion. This is up $5.9 billion (17.4 percent) from the $33.7 billion in merchandise exported in 2010.

? For the top 50 U.S. merchandise export destinations, Chicago ranks among the major metropolitan area exporters to Canada ($13.7 billion), Mexico ($5.4 billion), Germany ($1.6 billion), India ($1.6 billion), and Australia ($947 million).

? Chicago ranks among the major metropolitan area exporters of Chemicals ($7.5 billion), Computer and Electronic Products ($5.1 billion), Machinery, Except Electrical ($4.2 billion), Electrical Equipment, Appliances, and Component ($2.3 billion), and Food and Kindred Products ($2.2 billion).

? In 2011, Chicago benefited from existing trade agreements, exporting $19.1 billion to the NAFTA region (48% of total merchandise exports) and $561 million to the CAFTA-DR region.

Taiwan Added to Visa-Waiver Program

The U.S. announced October 2, 2012 that ist is instituting visa-free travel for Taiwanese visiting America. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano described it as a “logical development in close security, economic and people-to-people” ties between the U.S. and Taiwan. Effective November 1, 2012, Taiwan joins 36 countries whose nationals can travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for 90 days without a visa. It is expected that this will lead to increased tourism from Taiwan as well as facilitate business and trade between the two countries.

State Department “Direct Line for American Businesses” Program

The U.S. Department of State Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs has asked the U.S. Commercial Service to help spread the word to U.S. businesses regarding its new “Direct Line for American Businesses” program, which provides an opportunity for U.S. firms, particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises, to engage directly via teleconference with U.S. Ambassadors overseas. The program is open to American companies, which currently doing business in the country where the Ambassador serves or are interested in doing so. There is a calendar of calls at http://www.state.gov/e/eb/directline/ and businesses can sign up for alerts. Over 500 participants have joined calls to date across 18 different markets including China, Indonesia, and Turkey. Upcoming webinar topics include "An Overview of the Business Climate in Israel" on October 16.

November 26-30, 2012: Multi-Sector Trade Mission to South Africa & Zambia

South Africa is the largest economy and has the most diverse industry base in Sub-Sahara Africa, enjoying remarkable macroeconomic stability, and a largely pro-business environment. In 2011, total U.S.-Zambia trade increased by 83 percent over its 2010 level, and Zambia was just approved for a $355 million compact for clean water and sanitation. This U.S. Department of Commerce Executive-Led Trade Mission will focus on the highest-potential industry sectors for U.S. exports to South Africa and Zambia, namely: Agricultural, Energy, Transportation, and Mining Technologies. Stops will include Lusaka and Ndola, Zambia, and Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. December 3-7, 2012: Aerospace and Defense Trade Mission to Turkey ? Istanbul & Ankara

Civil aviation is booming in Turkey. Domestic and international passengers totaled over 85 million last year and Turkey’s strategic location ensures unrivaled advantages in airline, MRO, cargo and air taxi services in the region. Istanbul is also considering the construction of a third international airport. The Defense Sector is growing as well. In 2011, over $11 billion was allocated to MOD spending, with 47% spent on goods and services. Turkey has the world’s sixth largest army and the second largest army in NATO after the United States, while the Turkish Air Force (TAF) is the world’s third largest operator of the F-16. February 3-8, 2013: Architecture/ Infrastructure/ Hospitality Multi-Sector Mission to South India & Sri Lanka

U.S. exports to India have doubled from 2005-2011 and Sri Lanka’s GDP growth is over 7%. Now is the time to explore opportunities in these growing markets! May 21-24, 2013: HOSPITALAR 2013 Medical Trade Mission to Sao Paulo, Brazil Join the Commercial Service at the largest healthcare trade show in South America. In addition to providing exposure to Brazilian buyers, the trade show also attracts a high number of visitors from Mexico, Central and South America, as well as attendees from Europe, Asia and Africa. The Medical Trade Mission to Brazil is intended to include a variety of U.S. medical/healthcare industry manufacturers (equipment/devices, laboratory equipment, emergency equipment, diagnostic, physiotherapy and orthopedic, healthcare information technology, and other allied sectors), service providers, and associations and trade organizations. The Canadian Oilsands is one of the largest industrial engineering projects in the world with over $2.077 trillion in expected spending over the next 25 years to build and maintain the vast network of Oilsands projects and infrastructure. Thousands of workers and thousands of companies are positioning to support the Oilsands ? a process that is quickly reshaping the Canadian Economy. The 2012 NBSF will bring energy companies and current and potential supply chain partners together. The U.S. Commercial Service is partnering with Reed Exhibitions to build a U.S. travel and golf education pavilion at the Asia Golf Show to promote U.S. golf destinations and U.S. based golf schools. The number of Chinese visitors to the United States is expected to triple to 3 million over the next five years. With the number of golfers in China growing by 30% annually, significant interest in more Chinese groups visiting the United States to play golf, shop, and participate in everything U.S. golf destinations have to offer is expected. This is the largest golf show in Southern China, with Guangdong Province being the most important market for golf travel in China. This show will include exhibitions on all products related to golf, including golf equipment, construction of new courses and golf course maintenance equipment. But with an estimated 300,000 Chinese golfers thinking about taking a golf vacation this year, Commercial Service and Reed Exhibitions are dedicating one U.S. pavilion just to promote golf travel to the United States. January 30-February 4, 2013: Taipei International Book Fair 2012 - Taiwan

The Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE) is one of the largest annual trade shows for the publishing industry in Asia. TIBE2013 will take place January 30-February 4, 2013 at the Taipei World Trade Exhibition Halls with a focus on: promoting books, digital content, audio/video content including film, as well as selling publishing & licensing rights. Expo Manufactura 2013 is the largest diversified metalworking and manufacturing industrial technology exhibition in Mexico with an expected number of 450 exhibitors representing over 600 brands and 9,500 visitors from 26 countries. The Commerce Department forecasts around 100 U.S. exhibitors at Expo Manufactura 2013 which focuses on meeting high level buyers. The show will include the latest machines and efficient technical solutions, product-related services, sustainability in manufacturing for modern metalworking technology.
